Early American • Federal • Empire • Regency • Victorian • Historically, the fireplace has been the center of the home, where around the hearth the glow of a crackling log fire can be enjoyed and appreciated in a beautiful, well appointed antique fireplace. In the late 1700's as the economy expanded, the new affluence was reflected in the design of larger and more extravagant homes and interiors. Attractive andirons on a grand scale became desirable additions to the architecture of the 18th Century. Andirons with cabriole legs, ball and claw or hairy paw feet of the Chippendale variety appeared, reflecting trends in the other Decorative Arts such as cabinet and furniture making. These andirons incorporated architectural and design elements such as acorn, lemon, and flame finials and became the benchmark of fine design. As Adam style in architecture became popular in the last quarter of the 18th Century, fireplaces incorporated design details such as reeding and fluting reflecting the Neo-Classical influence. As the Federal Period introduced the double lemon topped andiron and the steeple top design, the 19th Century brought it's own changes.
The Victorian interest included a broad historical exploration of the Baroque, Rococo, and Empire moving into newer trends of the early 20th Century such as Art Nouveaux, Colonial Revival and, Arts & Crafts and Art Deco. Our fine collection of fireplace accessories includes antique andirons, fenders, surrounds, tools, copper pots & architectual elements in many styles from many periods. Experience the enduring attraction of the comforts and delights of the open fire. We welcome your inquiries about this historic collection of Antique Fireplaces & Accessories offered here for the first time. Each piece was handmade by the master craftsmen of the 18th, 19th, and early 20th Centuries. Fireplace Antique Store
